Diego Cavalieriholds both a Brazilian and Italian passport but he has spent the majority of his football career in Brazil. The 38-year-old is said to be of Italian ancestry though it must be pointed out that he has played in Italy just once and that was at Cesena in 2010.

His senior debut was at Palmeiras in June 2002 during the 4-0 thrashing of home team Rio Claro. Diego Cavalieri spent six years in the Palmeiras senior team before he left the club for the Premier League. Six-time European champions Liverpool snapped him up from Palmeiras in a £3m deal. The shot stopper signed a four-year deal at Anfield when he joined the Merseyside giants in July 2008 thus becoming the third Brazilian player at the club after left-back Fabio Aurelio and defensive midfielder Lucas Leiva.

Diego Cavalieri won two titles with Palmeiras including the Campeonato Paulista in his last year at the club before his move to Liverpool. The Campeonato Paulista 2008 was his second title at Palmeiras after the Campeonato BrasileiroSerie B 2003. He didn’t win any title during his time with the Reds. The Brazilian international was at Liverpool for just two years out of the four years signed when he moved to the club from Brazil.

Cavalieri signed for Italian club Cesena from Liverpool in the summer of 2010 for an undisclosed fee but he was briefly in Italy for some months before returning to Brazil to play for Fluminense where he won two more titles namely the Campeonato Carioca in 2012 and the Campeonato BrasileiroSerie A in 2012. He also signed for Crystal Palace in the Premier League and Brazilian sideBotafogo later in his career.
