WAGNER BACKS CAVALIERI

Fluminense midfielder Wagner has said that the former Liverpool goalkeeper Diego Cavalieri was one of the main reasons for the 2-0 win over Náutico the club achieved this weekend. The former Liverpool goalkeeper completed his move to Fluminense after failing to break into the first-team at the Merseyside club.

He has been an inspirational figure at Fluminense after he has starred in many good performances over the last couple of seasons. He was once again at his best in the match against Náutico. Fluminense might have managed a comfortable looking 2-0 win, but the scoreline did not tell the whole story according to the midfielder Wagner.

The 29-year-old was not getting as many first-team opportunities as he would have liked after initially completing his move to the Brazilian club back in 2011. However, this season has been totally different because he has been used often by the manager as the first choice goalkeeper. The regular football he has been experiencing has in turn led to a much better form. Wagner has said that the club would have certainly struggled to maintain their 2-0 advantage had not been for Diego Cavalieri in the match.

”They [Náutico] had many chances to score but we were more efficient, and besides that, we had Cavalieri who was in inspired form. ‘He played really well and he helped us get the win,” said the midfielder after the match. Meanwhile, the manager Abel Braga said that the former Liverpool goalkeeper will not be in the starting line-up for the match against Botafogo due to a virus. ”Cavalieri will not play against Botafogo. He hasn’t been able to do any specific work this week, and on Thursday he felt dizzy, he was vomiting and he had diarrhea,” Braga told reporters ahead of the match with Botafogo.

Diego Cavalieri has said that the fans are extremely right when they criticise the club for not winning for three consecutive matches.

“You have to make points at home against opponents for the title. We point out. We need the win against the Portuguese would not have to be chasing after. Three consecutive draws is horrible. Better winning one and losing two to get the victory tiebreaker criteria. We let points slip at home for the second time. Saturday we have to win, “said Diego Cavalieri after the 0-0 draw with Internacional. The club will be taking on Portuguesa, who are currently in the ninth position in the table. Diego Cavalieri has said that it is a must win game now.

It proved to be a contentious decision as it meant that Fluminense were unable to get back into the game since then. They managed to protect their goal for long periods of the game, which gives them a fighting chance in the return leg.
